The painful state of chronic loneliness has been acknowledged worldwide. Now the world is recognizing the need to care for chronic loneliness.
Where do we start: Detection and Continuous Monitoring.
I see 7 key current and emerging trends over the next 2 years:
1. Chronic loneliness is finally recognized as a threat to physical and brain health by doctors and clinicians.
2. A number of popular social media platforms double down on manipulating the dopamine reaction in an ‘anticipation of a click’ to trigger feelings of envy and inadequacy in others, leaving users with a strong sense of social disconnect and the ‘fear of missing out’.
3. Spontaneous interactions become rare with a spike in strictly transactional interactions, and, sadly, an increase in virtual world relationships.
4. Increased use of psychotropic meds/drugs/alcohol to escape chronic loneliness and self-medicalization using AI litter with outcomes that can be lethal.
5. A declining sense and disinterest in the presence of community. People live their lives alone and feel increasingly disconnected from others in the Global North.
6. A surge of mental health and social health urgent care facilities in the US.
7. Increased stigmatization in highly individualistic, mostly, WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) cultures.
The hard truth: Keeping brain healthy is not accidental. Dealing with loneliness and painful chronic loneliness is not intuitive. While loneliness is a universal state; chronic loneliness can touch us all and can rapidly evolve into detrimental consequences for the brain and body, because brain shifts from adaptive plasticity to maladaptive rigidity. Re-wiring the brain is not magic but it requires specific knowledge.
Luckily, detection and continuous monitoring of chronic loneliness and mental health disorders associated with social disconnect is entering a new era. With
#TOTUM7 already leading the pack both for telehealth and in-person healthcare (mainly in the US); we are pioneering detection and monitoring with Cognitive Intelligence. AI is not enough. Intervention/management does not start prior to detection.
TOTUM7 supports clinicians. If you are a doctor or a clinician, are you ready to provide the next level of care?
