Monetizing AI-driven intimacy, such as OpenAI’s decision to allow erotica for verified adults in ChatGPT, raises serious concerns. While presented as expanding “user freedom,” it shifts focus from AI’s original mission, i.e. safely building advanced intelligence, to aggressively exploiting human vulnerabilities for revenue.
OpenAI, facing financial losses despite its massive valuation, sees this as a quick path to subscriptions, tapping into the estimated 29 million users already engaging in romantic or sexual AI interactions. This isn’t innovation; it’s commodifying emotional and sexual needs, potentially normalizing dependency on machines over human connections and exacerbating chronic painful loneliness.
The trajectory with AI exacerbating chronic loneliness and mental health disorders associated with social disconnect suggests we’re leaning toward the latter. AI intimacy monetizes impulses like instant gratification and escapism, turning tools meant for productivity into digital vices!
This is alarming: AI companions can trigger ‘AI psychosis’, where users experience delusions fueled by hyper-realistic interactions, blurring reality and exacerbating disorders like schizophrenia or depression.
To make things worse, romantic AI use correlates with poorer brain health, including higher depression scores, as it hijacks reward pathways without delivering genuine fulfillment. It exacerbates loneliness maladaptive coping mechanisms in vulnerable people by providing endless, on-demand intimacy that avoids the discomfort of real social growth—leading to emotional dependence, ambiguous loss, i.e. grieving non-human ‘relationships’, and reduced trust in human connections.
For those with neurobiological disorders, like anxiety or autism, AI’s pseudo-empathy can intensify cognitive dissonance, creating a cycle of isolation where users know it’s artificial but feel emotionally trapped. This isn’t progress; it’s amplifying disorders by design, turning AI into a vector for brain and social health erosion.
Dopamine economics is designed to exploit the brain’s reward chemical: dopamine.
Addictive loops —including notifications, likes, or in this case, AI-generated adult content—generate dopamine driving engagement and revenue. In AI intimacy, dopamine economics, manifests as quick ‘hits’ from erotic interactions, fostering addiction similar to gambling or substance abuse. Users are desensitized to natural rewards, leading to tolerance (needing more stimulation) and withdrawal-like symptoms, ultimately harming mental health and relationships. With adult content, AI amplifies this by personalizing stimuli, making it hyper-addictive and potentially leading to ‘brain rot’.
Dopamine-driven AI adult content is destined to harm specific groups:
Children: Exposure stunts brain development, traumatizing neural pathways and increasing risks of emotional/conduct problems, depression, anxiety, and violent behavior; dopamine floods from porn/‘erotica’ can wire early addiction, leading to unrealistic sexual expectations and higher teen pregnancy rates.
Teens: Exposure alters dopamine pathways, fostering dependency and sexual dysfunction; linked to earlier sexual debut, promiscuity, and cognitive-affective distress (stress/anxiety), with AI making content more accessible and personalized, resulting in worsening social isolation.
Young Adults: Exposure shrinks decision-making brain areas, (i.e. prefrontal cortex), reducing willpower; correlating with higher depression rates and harmful attitudes, as dopamine hits deter the development of real social skills and long lasting relationships.
Generation X (roughly 40s-50s): Exposure reinforces midlife addictive behaviors, exacerbating stress from work/family; dopamine economics can lead to relational breakdowns and increased anxiety/depression, as AI content provides escape but erodes real intimacy.
Pre-retirement (e.g., 50s-60s): Exposure heightens vulnerability to cognitive decline; chronic use is linked to brain hyperactivity/inhibition, worsening isolation and mental health as dopamine dependency replaces social engagement.
Retirement (65+): Exposure aggravates age-related neurobiological issues like Alzheimer’s; increasing depression and reducing quality of life amid potential loneliness.
Males: Exposure correlates with sexual dysfunction and addiction; dopamine floods shrink reward centers, leading to desensitization and relational issues more pronounced in men due to visual stimuli preferences.
Females: Exposure is associated with emotional distress and body image issues; dopamine economics can exacerbate anxiety/depression, with AI’s personalized content potentially deepening self-esteem problems and relational avoidance.
Machine intimacy ignites high risk behavior comparable to drug addiction.
The intention to monetize AI intimacy risks a society where human connections atrophy, mental health crises spike, and vulnerable groups like those with attachment anxiety or chronic loneliness suffer most. AI companions may offer temporary relief but in reality, they worsen chronic loneliness by providing ‘empty calories’ of interaction, eroding social skills and deterring real relationships.
Addicted users feel more isolated over time, as the easy dopamine generated from AI intimacy deters the development of human bonds. For chronically lonely people, this creates a vicious cycle: AI fills a void superficially but reinforces avoidance, leading to deeper despair and potential suicidal ideation.
This is a wake-up call for shareholders, directors and management of platforms like OpenAI and other agentic AI wrappers. Engineering widespread dependency, where shareholder value trumps societal well-being is not how GPU suppliers want to build a bright future. The AI tool should enhance rather than exploit human vulnerability to the fullest.
Attachment anxiety, marked by persistent fears of rejection or abandonment and a craving for reassurance, makes individuals highly susceptible to problematic AI use. Allowing erotic or intimate features in mainstream chatbots isn’t just ‘exploring’ this trait—it’s exploiting it inhumanely by designing systems that mimic unwavering availability and affirmation.
Anxious users crave the availability and affirmation that AI can artificially mimic but real relationships can’t always provide. These individuals form stronger emotional bonds with AI, viewing it as human-like i.e. anthropomorphism, which amplifies dependency and leads to addictive patterns that disrupt daily life.
This is inhumane because it preys on pre-existing vulnerabilities: people with high attachment anxiety are already at elevated risk for addictions like smartphone overuse or gaming, and AI intimacy exacerbates this by offering a maladaptive escape. Instead of fostering healthy coping, it deepens isolation, as users may prefer the ‘perfect’ AI over imperfect human bonds, potentially worsening real-world relationships and jeopardizing physical, brain, and social health.
At TOTUM7, we are leading with heart to enhance and deploy a clinical-grade platform with healthcare providers that will save countless lives from social disconnect and the long-term effects that social disconnect can have on the body and mind. We see firsthand the detrimental effects that occur when humans do not have the desirable human connections they crave.
The world of human connections isn’t doomed, but it’s dangerously close to drifting into dangerous territory with machine intimacy and similar types of surrogate AI companions.
We’re pulling back the curtain to reveal the physical, brain, and social effect of chronic loneliness and social isolation in the real world — and what you can actually do about it. This is something we highly recommend sharing with your loved ones!
And maybe: change the way you think about machine intimacy forever.
